Food #3: Spaghetti with Chickpeas and Carrots


Yes, I am on a carrot kick these days. You might go so far as to say that I am on a majestic quest to put carrots in everything and anything I can think of. Go ahead, make my day.

This recipe tastes amazing; it’s super easy, quick (because I was very very hungry and ready to eat the floor), and did I mention that it tastes really good? It does! Meat eaters gobbled the hell out of this thing like it was going out of style. Seriously!

Carrots truly are one of nature’s greatest bounties (and easily one of the most versatile veggies out there).

I think I’ll make carrot cake or a carrot ice cream next.

I’m thinking…carrot ice cream…Mm. That might be good.

Wait…better write that down…

Food #2: Vegan Carrot Oatmeal Cookies

CARROTS 010I decided that I wanted to make cookies again (yay!), but when I looked in the fridge I saw no eggs and no butter. Can you believe it?! Instead of getting mad (and, I really have no place to as it’s not my house), I thought about how I could get the cookies that I so desperately needed wanted.

After a quick inspection, I found oatmeal (in a canister – from which I swiftly scooped out the appropriate amount before anyone else could get to it), dark brown sugar (thank GOD!), carrots (stick with me on this one), maple syrup (bless!), vegetable oil (useful for a multitude of things), and cinnamon (which is good for just about anything).

And, from all that cookies were born and the cookie monster in me was very satisfied:

Food #1: On Chocolate & Gluten Free Chocolate Chip-ish Cookies

My fixation with chocolate reached new heights this week when I finished – not one but two – bars of Hershey’s chocolate: Hershey’s Cookies ‘n’ Creme and Almonds & Toffee. I succumbed to chocolate pangs that had been plaguing me throughout the course of shark week in a major way: Mother nature really did a number on me for a few days – the pain was so real I just clutched and threw a fit with the bed – and the only relief I could get was to bite off a piece of chocolate and moan for the small semblance of chocolate-y joy it brought me. So um, yea. I went to town on Hershey’s this weekend.

As you can see, I had already finished one third of the bar en-route to my bedroom – gobbled up a sizable portion of that cookies n creme bad boy before I even got home. As for the second one, we won’t speak of how quickly that came and went. Thank you Hershey’s for being you.

On Natural Hair

A foreword

This is not a piece where I get all preachy in order to  persuade black women everywhere to start whipping their natural curls back and forth on their head. Not at all. I’m only interested in making you understand why I have chosen to wear my hair naturally and why I take care of it in the way that I do.  Because my hair care routine (as you eventually will see) is extremely extensive. See this, and other hair posts that follow, as an expression of love that I have for my kinky curls and a show of support to other black women out there who might be interested (but perhaps too afraid of going natural). I want black women to see that it can be done, and that our hair, exactly as it is naturally, is beautiful too. Finally, the most important point that I’ll ever make on all this natural hair business is this: any great head of hair –  regardless of the ethnicity it comes from – is always at its best when it’s lovingly cared for.
